In relation to the smallest forms of existence to the larger context of existence itself, we exist in the medium. The use of the fractal as a geometric shape that has "self-similarity" is grounded in both the scientific and the artistic. That which literally shapes the world we exist in can be expressed both accurately AND abstractly by the fractal. Fractals are representations of "self-similarity" is the idea of endless repetition.
At a large level, the image above seems to have rugged edges. When you zoom into the edges at a smaller level, the shape and structure is repeated similarly to the larger structure: self-similarity*. In a mathematical sense, this is endless. In an artistic sense, the whole is limited to its smallest sub-atomic detail to its larger structure as a whole.
In relation to our existence as human beings, "self-similarity" can be exhibited ourselves. From the structure of our skin cells to our ability to pro-create/replicate ourselves through our offspring, we exhibit the "being" and the "actions" of self-similarity. Human history is book-ended by the small and the large.
We are the medium.
